"Excellent but Noisy PTZ Network Camera by Panasonic" 2008-08-16

Businesses have used security/surveillance cameras for many years, to identify people in certain areas of the building, to watch for suspicious activity, or to catch people in the act of doing evil deeds. However, as technology has improved and prices have dropped, these cameras have now become popular additions to home security systems as well. While many people still choose Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras and recorders, mostly due to their low cost, the added flexibility of network cameras (otherwise known as IP cameras or Internet cameras) is starting to greatly influence homeowners. Network cameras allow easy installation and integration with your wired or wireless home network. While CCTV cameras require a standalone monitor to view the images, network cameras can be controlled and viewed from any computer on your home network, and can also be viewed from outside your network with computers, cell phones and PDAs that have an active Internet connection. But choosing a good network camera that meets your needs can be a bit tricky, as most of the network cameras currently on the market are either low end (relatively inexpensive) or high end (extremely expensive); with very few choices that fall in between. If you're looking for a network camera that you can control pan, tilt, and zoom, it can be very difficult to find a quality device that is affordable. Well Panasonic recognized the strong need for a mid-level network camera, which would offer features that are usually only available on high priced models. They answered this consumer need with the Panasonic BB-HCM527A PoE ceiling mount, dome network camera; complete with motorized pan, tilt and zoom features.

Setting up a home computer network and adding IP cameras to this network requires a bit of technical aptitude, so you may wish to call upon the help of someone with a computer technical background if you are not very tech-savvy. This review is for the BB-HCM527A network camera, so I am going to concentrate on the camera itself and not include a long dissertation about home networking in general.

The Panasonic BB-HCM527A network camera is NOT a Wi-Fi device, so you need to make sure you are able to run a CAT5, CAT5e or CAT6 cable from your network router, switch or hub to where your camera will be mounted. This model is also a PoE (Power over Ethernet) device, so you will want to make sure your network has a PoE switch, or you will need to purchase a separate PoE injector. Although PoE technology is becoming more popular in business environments, most home networks do not yet utilize this new and somewhat expensive technology. However, the advantage of PoE is that your power travels over the same Ethernet cable as your data; meaning that you do not have to have a power outlet right next to where you plan to mount your camera. I do not have a PoE network in my home, so I purchased the PD-3001/AC 1PORT Poe Injector Ac Input 802.3AF and Cisco Supported, made by PowerDsine. This allowed me to run a cable from my network switch to the injector, which plugs into a wall AC outlet, and then run another cable from the injector to the network camera itself. You now have your power and data connections all in one wire.

This remarkable device is a feature rich network camera, with nearly all of the bells and whistles you could want. It is able to pan from -175 to +175 degrees, giving a total sweep of roughly 350 degrees. Mounting the camera to the ceiling is a fairly straightforward process, utilizing the easy to follow instructions and mounting hardware, which is all included in the camera kit. It has a tilt angle adjustment from 0 degrees (straight down) to +82 degrees. The zoom capabilities of this camera are not quite as impressive; offering only a 4.6x zoom (2.3x optical, 2x digital). Still, for most home or small business applications this should prove to be sufficient. Video output can be adjusted between three different resolutions, at up to 30 frames per second. Output formats include JPEG, with three different quality settings, and MPEG4. The light sensitivity of this camera is from 2 to 100,000 lux, and can go all the way down to 0.2 lux when in "Color Night View" mode. It also allows 2-way, half-duplex audio, with a built-in microphone and an output for an external speaker (sold separately). Buyers should be aware that there is no built-in speaker in this camera, so it will only allow 1-way audio unless a self-powered speaker is plugged into the camera. All video and audio from this camera can be monitored from your home or business network, or from outside your local network with a computer, or a web compatible cellular phone or PDA; all using a free Internet service called "Viewnetcam." This Internet service is totally free for anyone who owns a Panasonic IP camera, and it gives full access to all of the camera controls, configuration settings, and video/audio output from the camera. I could go on and on, explaining all of the features and specifications of this network camera, but I will simply list them below for your review.

Since this camera has a built-in motion sensor, you can adjust the trigger threshold and sensitivity settings on a PC, and the camera will then automatically capture and record images when motion is detected. The images can be stored in the camera's memory buffer, to a user installed SD or SDHC card, or they can be sent to you via e-mail or FTP transfer. This makes the BB-HCM527A network camera a great device for a business environment or for a vacation home, for motion detection security. And speaking of security, the BB-HCM527A can also be connected to most home or business security systems, so that the camera will automatically start recording when an alarm is triggered by the security system. Unfortunately the camera lens will not automatically pan or tilt to the area where the motion was detected. Therefore you will want to position the lens in the direction of the area you wish to be monitored in your absence. The camera also has a timer record feature, which allows you to setup days of the week and times at which you wish to have the camera record. Both video and audio can be captured during a motion triggered or timed event. Reading the saved data from the built-in memory buffer or from an installed SD card is very easy, using any web browser. You can also use 3rd party software, installed on any PC on your home or business network, to record full-time or triggered event streaming video and audio. Panasonic gives you a demo version of their own recording utility called Network Camera Recorder with Viewer Software. However, purchasing the fully licensed version of this software will set you back a few hundred dollars, and it is pretty basic software for such a hefty price tag.

Connecting this camera to my network wasn't overly challenging; but I have worked in the I.T. support field for over 20 years. Still, hooking this model camera up to your personal home or small business network really shouldn't prove to be very difficult for most people. The camera will acquire an IP address from your DHCP enabled router automatically, once powered up, but I would recommend that you give it a static IP. This just helps prevent any technical routing issues in the future. Panasonic includes a setup wizard CD, which will discover your new camera on your network, and will allow you to configure the settings of the camera and view the video (and hear the audio) output. If you assign your camera a static IP address, as I suggested, then you will be able to easily access your camera from any computer on your network, by simply typing the IP address of your camera into a web browser (with a prefix of http://). The BB-HCN527A camera provides impressive video and audio quality, when viewed from a computer inside your network, and the pan, tilt, and zoom functions are very responsive when you trigger them from the control panel in your browser. Colors are easily washed out by extremes in lighting (too bright or too dark), but the overall image remains clear unless the lighting drops below the required levels. Low light images will appear grainy; looking like static produced by over-the-air analog television signals. Panasonic's "Color Night View Mode" does improve colors in low light, but does very little to reduce the graininess of the image itself. I have found the C.N.V. mode to be fairly useless myself.

Getting your camera configured for viewing from the Internet (outside of your home or business network) is definitely the most challenging part of the installation process. It requires a little tweaking of your network router settings. The most important thing is to make sure that your router is UPnP compatible, and that the UPnP service is enabled on your router. You may even have to manually add your own UPnP Forwarding settings, if your router doesn't automatically open the correct port for your camera. I ended up having to do this myself, since my router was having problems with the automatic port forwarding itself. I actually installed 5 new IP cameras at once (two of which were the BB-HCN527A model of which this review is for), so I spent quite a bit of time fiddling with router settings in order to get everything working properly. Once your router is configured you will need to open up the Internet settings screen for your camera, from a PC connected to your network, to enable the Auto Port Forwarding (IPv4), and to configure the camera to allow access from the Internet (IPv6). You then register the camera with Viewnetcam.com, which then tracks your camera's IP address on the Internet and forwards it to the internal IP address of your camera on your network. This has to be done as your internal IP addresses are only used by your personal or business network. Your personal network addresses are not the same as your Internet IP address. It's kind of like having UPS deliver a package to your neighbor, and your neighbor then delivers it to you. This forwarding also provides an extra level of security, so that your internal network addresses are never directly accessed by someone outside of your network. Viewnetcam.com does a pretty good job of handling this forwarding task and you should rarely run into any problems on that end. However, if you should have any problems while configuring your new camera, Panasonic has an excellent technical support team, strictly dedicated to IP camera support. I have contacted them a couple of times, to work out some issues I had setting up a Wi-Fi network camera, and I was very impressed with the technical knowledge of both support staff members that I spoke with. Panasonic stands behind their network cameras very well and they will walk you through the entire process of getting it configured to communicate with your network and over the Internet.

I have had two of these Panasonic BB-HCM527A network cameras working in my home now for the past 3 months, and so far I have found very few faults in this model. The video image is very good for a camera of this price range, the audio is crystal clear, and the pan/tilt/zoom control interface (using a web browser with an AcitveX plug-in) is simple to use and very responsive. Because of the 350 degree panning sweep of this camera, I mounted them in central locations, between rooms of my house, so that one camera can cover multiple rooms. This type of mounting configuration may not make much sense for those that intend to utilize the motion sensing feature (since the camera has to be pointed in the direction of motion). However, as my wife runs a daycare business out of our home, these cameras allow her to keep track of the location of all children, when they are wandering about the house. My wife keeps a Wi-Fi enabled laptop near her at all times, so she can pull up the cameras and pan them to show different rooms at any time. I really only have a couple of beefs with this model camera, which are actually rather minor. First of all, the zoom feature of this camera is quite limited. The 2.3x optical zoom provides crystal clear images, but obviously it can't zoom right in on something really small at only 2.3x power. The digital zoom adds another 2x, essentially doubling the range, but using the digital zoom distorts the image pretty bad and starts making fine details hard to recognize. In my experience I have always found digital zooms to be fairly useless in almost all digital cameras and camcorders, and this IP network camera is no exception. But since these cameras are mounted in my home, I really don't need a more powerful optical zoom feature. Business owners may want to consider this issue though, as it may restrict their surveillance abilities. My second complaint involves the noise this camera makes when panning and tilting. Panning the camera emits a loud grinding type sound, which can easily be heard from anyone within several feet of the camera. Tilting the camera lens is a bit quieter, but still produces a clearly audible buzzing sound. Zooming the lens is very quiet, with only a slight hum, which can only be heard if you are standing right below the camera. But the panning and tilting noises are definitely irritating and will blow any attempts you have at secretly monitoring somebody's movements within your home. It may not wake you out of a deep sleep, but it will certainly get anyone's attention that is within 10 to 15 feet from the camera. Every time my wife or I pan the camera to look at someone, they always end up looking at the camera, as it's pretty obvious where the sound is coming from. Therefore I wouldn't consider this camera to be a good choice for a discrete nanny cam, for monitoring a nanny or babysitter. As soon as you move the camera lens they will know you're watching them.

Overall I am extremely pleased with the Panasonic BB-HCM527A PoE Network Camera. It comes with all of the mounting hardware you should need, and the instruction manual is easy to understand and full of illustrations. Just remember that you will need to provide your own PoE power source (either a PoE network switch or a PoE injector device) and your own CAT5, CAT5e or CAT6 Ethernet cable. You should also consider purchasing and installing a SD or SDHC memory flash card, if you plan to use the motion detection feature, as the built-in camera memory buffer (approx. 6MB) fills up pretty fast. Although the camera has a built-in microphone, for picking up audio, you will need to purchase a portable, self-amplified speaker, if you wish to have full 2-way audio capabilities. This camera seems to be well built, and it comes with a boatload of advanced, very useful features. If it had a more powerful zoom, came with a fully licensed version of the video recording software, and was far less noisy during operation, I could easily give this network camera 5 stars. But even though I can do without the recording software, and I can even live with the meager zoom capabilities, I just can't give anything higher than 4 stars for a device that sounds like an electric blender, every time I move the lens. The engineers at Panasonic should really consider redesigning the motor and gear system of this camera. After all, nobody wants their surveillance camera to scream "I'm Watching You!"

The Cobra PC1000 is quite a useful camera, but its non-standard drivers mean that you need to keep the original disks close to your computer. I have recently upgraded my computer and found out that I lost my original setup disk. Used to other companies' service I expected the Cobra website to hold the drivers for this camera, but they didn't.

I emailed the support at Cobra, but the replied said they cannot provide me with the drivers and if they are not on the website, they cannot help me.

This is a great little web camera and has added a whole new dimension to seeing grand-kids on both coasts.

Not sure what the person that called it "poor design" and cheapy-looking was talking about. I mean, it looks just like the picture. Strange...

I bought this for webcam use with family across the country. My Mac G4 has no built-in cam. Here are the high-yield facts. I am new to web-cam use and give myself a 5 of 10 for computer literacy.

1) Just like the other reviews say, you "just plug it in." No driver or other software to install/download.

2) It is small, would fit in my closed fist.

3) Based on my own experience, it:

-works well with Mac

-works well with Skype

-can be viewed on the "other end" by a Windows PC. In other words, my dad can see me well on his PC when I use this iMage camera with my Mac G4.

Overall, good buy for use for video chatting. Quality is poor with bad lighting, but this is easily fixed: you want to have light on your face, but no light source in sight of the camera. In other words, you want a good light source just behind the lens shining on the user.

In other news, be sure to try Skype first when video chatting with Mac and PC.

I specifically bought the Quickcam because it says that it was compatible with Windows Vista. It worked for a while, but it is VERY finicky. Everytime Windows would update the computer the drivers would not work, and I'd have to reinstall. After SEVERAL reinstall attempts I finally get the webcam working. However, now for the third time it has failed, and I am no longer able to update. When I go to Logitech website to find updated drivers, there aren't any. Then it says this camera is out of date - to purchase a new one. On the box it says compatible with Vista - what gives!

I've bought a Microsoft cam - going to see if this works better. Don't buy logitech - the support [...]

This camera was really cheap to buy "new" and really easy to install (plug and play). It does have its issues though.

Pros:

+ Adjustable picture quality to make for a crisp picture.

+ Plug and play allows easy use on many computers.

Cons:

- Clip does not hold to laptop well and falls off frequently.

- Even with volume all the way up, everybody hears me as a whisper unless my face is 3 inches from the camera...in which case, they see a REALLY big close up!

Overall, it was less than 10 dollars after shipping and tax and the video part works fine. If you have a microphone built into your computer, this would be a great buy!

The Creative Labs Live! Cam Pro VGA Webcam for Notebooks is a small web camera with good image rendering and built with pretty good quality materials. It is perfect for those on the road or people attached to their notebooks such as students or business people.

The software was easy to install and is not too complicated to use. It has some neat video effects for those who wish to play around a little bit. The sturdy clip will hold it onto the top of your laptop screen quite well. ***However*** It will not expand wide enough to fit a standard monitor. The cord is very short, to help cut down on excess cord when attaching it to your notebook. A USB extension would have been nice for those who wish to place it elsewhere. I do like the handy hard case that comes with it.

Another benefit is that Creative brand is a very common and well known brand, so many third party video applications support it.

If you are looking for a quality web cam for notebook fun or business, you should consider this one.

The Creative Labs Live! Cam Pro VGA Webcam will get the job done, just don't expect any awesome features.

The install was relatively simple and nothing out the ordinary. I did have to perform a mandatory restart on both Vista machines I tested it on, though. You have the option to install several software programs, as well as the cam's drivers. It took around 5 minutes total for the install to finish. You get the basic Creative Webcam software that allows you take pics and videos. The Creative Webcam software will also take a pic at a set interval and post it to a webpage or FTP site so that you can monitor a room remotely via a web-browser. I checked this out and went through the motions, but I couldn't fully test out this feature because I don't have a dedicated FTP site for myself. There is also a video slideshow creator and a SightSpeed video/mic optimization tool.

The camera itself is pretty good. It has a tension grip that keeps the camera on your laptop screen. However, it was unable to grip the top of my 24" LCD screen for my desktop computer so if you are hoping to use it for a laptop and desktop, you might be out of luck. Once mounted on your screen, though, the camera can tilt up and around, almost in a full 360. There's also a microphone on the device that works as well as any webcam mic in the $50 and under range.

The video and capture ability is exactly what you'd expect for a webcam in the $40-50 range. It shoots solid video at 320 x 240 resolution, which was ideal for my Yahoo and AIM instant messaging tests. You can shoot native resolution video at 640 x 480, but it didn't look as clean. If you step it up to the max 800 x 600 interpolated resolution the image appears blocky and pixelated. Same goes for images. You can take good snapshots at 640 x 480, but once you start to go higher than that the image quality takes a noticeable hit. These resolution limitations are similar on most webcams of this price range.

To summarize, this webcam is the epitome of "you get what you pay for," nothing more, nothing less. The camera works and gets the job done for IM programs and making short video mail clips. It doesn't have any fancy bells and whistles, but that's ok at this cost. The only thing that might be a difference maker is that it does come with a cheap plastic case to house your camera (the cord has to be wrapped on a track outside of the case) when you take your laptop on the road. If you are loyal to Creative products, you won't be disappointed with dropping $40-50 for this device. However, if you strongly prefer other brand names, you probably won't be missing too much (except the case) if you decide to go in another direction here.

"Garbage." 2009-06-04

This webcam is garbage, pure and simple. The process for installing the software was exhaustive, and not user friendly. When I finally got it installed and went to use it, a box popped up that said "Creative ?????????-?????" and had the option for "ok" or "cancel". I hit 'ok' and the error message just kept popping up over and over again, so I hit 'cancel' and tried again. Same problem. I uninstalled and then reinstalled. Same problem. I went to the creative website and tried to update the driver. It said the old driver needed to be uninstalled first, I clicked 'ok' and then got that weird question mark error message again. I went through hell and back trying to uninstall the old driver before being able to finally install the updated one. Once I got the new driver installed, it worked.

The image was blurry and shaky. It says it auto focuses, but I had to manually focus it by turning the lens to get it anywhere near decent. At it's best, the image quality is still very poor and dark. The included software is just filler and not very good in my opinion. In case you're thinking that maybe I'm just too computer-illiterate to use this webcam, I should mention that I have a degree in Imaging Digital Arts.

Aside from that, the clamp will not work for a notebook thinner than 3/8". So for something like a Macbook Air, this wont work. It also wont work for a screen thicker than 5/8". So if you thought you would use this with an LCD monitor on a desktop, it probably wont fit.

In conclusion, for $20 more you can get something like the Microsoft Life Cam Show, which is what I would recommend. The picture quality is 100 x's better, and installation is extremely simple.

It works as advertised. The software is just fair and nags to buy an upgrade. I found that I could use this on PC's lacking a camera (mostly desktops and older laptops) to get adequate performance for video telephone calls and for conference calls where some information needs to be exchanged. There is enough resolution for viewing some documents. The clamp is limited in that it can only be mounted on a horizontal surface. There is no way to rotate the camera by 90 degrees. All-in-all I can recommend this camera as an add-on to an older computer or as a camera that monitors a room. When using this on a desktop computer, the rigid mounting clamp means that you have to do something special to mount it horizontally as it will not fit on an average monitor (too thick). Room monitoring works quite well.

This is a basic webcam, with ok picture quality, not much better than the webcam on most newer laptops. This is meant to sit on top of the flat screen monitor or laptop screen. The performance in low-light is okay, nothing too great. This webcam is adjusted for artificial light as that is the most common scenario. The colors in bright natural light appear a little washed away but very few people use webcam in natural light. If using it on a laptop the attached cord pulls it backward a little so you'll have to adjust it so it does not fall off.

If you're looking for better picture quality go for a webcam with higher MPs.

This is a good, solid webcam. It does its job and feels well-built, even though its a little lightweight. The picture quality is good. It is built for flatscreens or perhaps older laptops without built-in webcams. There is a focusing ring on the front and a built-in microphone. I ususally don't install the additional software, but it allows color adjustment and zoom capabilities. As is, it works out of the box without too much hassle. It works with all the major messaging clients and I have heard it works with certain varieties of Linux as well, although I only tried it on Windows XP.

The base of this camera comes with a plastic piece hinged on the back. It is made to clip onto the edge of a flat screen monitor. It doesn't balance very well on the top of a crt monitor or a flat surface. The camera is on a swivel and will move side to side and forward. The camera will not swivel up, so if you stand up you will have to step back, and maybe refocus, to stay in the frame. The USB cable exits from the rear of the camera so adjusting the camera's position means you must adjust the cable as well. There is a focusing ring on the front. When focused on a close subject, the camera picks up the objects in the background clearly with almost no blur. There is separate software that can be initialized that allows for a minimum amount of color adjustment and zoom. The software can also manage snapshots and videos from the webcam. The camera, once focused, tracks movement well and there's almost no jitter in the stream. The microphone is very sensitive. This is an okay camera, but I think for the price it's not really that special. The webcam's design is modern and sleek, but the performance isn't that great. I find that the built-in camera in my Mac works just as well, and it is fixed as opposed to detachable/USB connected. I don't think having the Live IM feature is much of a benefit.

Overall, I think if you're going to invest in a webcam, maybe get a more expensive one that is of exceptional quality and will last a long time.

I bought this camera a couple of weeks ago for use with Skype. Installation was straightforward and using the camera with Skype is not a problem. Video capture rate isn't great, but it's adequate. I've used it to communicate with my family when I've been in Europe and it does a reasonable job. Just don't move too quickly.

However, I've just learned that there's an apparent incompatibility with capturing video from a DV video camera when this camera is installed. Since the install, when I try to use Windows Movie Maker or Nero Vision to capture video from my Sony HandyCam, my Dell 530 immediately gives me a Blue Screen of Death and reboots. It's repeatable--about 20 times in a row.

I've upgraded the driver from 1.0.3.0 to 1.1.3.0 which in itself is a challenge because Creative doesn't even list this model (VF0415) as a product choice in the support section of its website. No matter, the new driver didn't fix the problem.

I have an open ticket with Creative, so we'll see if there's a resolution. Haven't found one through Googgle, though see some evidence that a camera related file, Ctclsflt.sys, is likely the culprit.

Bottom line, if you're just using this for the web and have no other video aspirations, it's ok. Otherwise, caveat emptor.

Metaphorically speaking, this webcam doesn't come with any bells or whistles. It works as a digital camera or a video camera: allowing you to take and save pictures and videos. And of course needles to say, the Dynex 1.3 mega pixel web cam also functions.......as a web cam: allowing you to broadcast yourself live over the internet.

The picture quality is okay considering it's price range. But, it's a little slow to pick up movement. And the built in microphone works fine.

I only recommend this for someone who's casually interested in a web cam. It's not the most impressive piece of technology I've ever seen but, it's certainly not the worst either.

I can't find a way to contact this seller to ask if they know a way to get this cam to work on Win XP. I sent this cam to my GF and she said when she plugs it in it throws an error. I didn't have time to talk to her about it, but I'm guessing that it threw the "Can't find driver" error. I have no idea what version of XP she is using either.

Anyway, if you buy this cam, prepare to work a little to get it working, if you can.

To be fair, the low star mark is not a hit against this little cam overall, since it might work on other systems as described--as needing no driver.

I bought this Cam at BestBuy for $10 and free shipping. I Bought 2 and I'm very pleased. It's effective and looks nice. The video and pictures are crystal clear, and you really don't need much light. it's has over 1 mega pixels, so it's like a digital camera. This is nothing like the standard typical cam for even half the price of retail ($50-$60) The USB cord is extra long so i can move this cam around. The cam is also moveable...up, down, side to side. Lots of extra bonus software to enjoy. Easy to install. Rests ontop of monitor and doesn't fall off or over.

I have been using this for more than a month now, with a laptop which I effectively use as a desktop. Picture quality is quite good and good functionality of zoom as well.

Only problem is, I cannot attach it to the top of the laptop monitor; which I wouldn't want to as of now. I have to keep on a desk or a flat surface to use it.

Another negative aspect - you need to take care not to topple it while using. Moving the wire can topple it easily - I guess this is a part of every cam.

To summarize, a very good product for desktop users and also for laptop users who don't move the laptop much.

Pros: Install went flawlessly. Updated to latest version from web site. Quick and friendly response from support to check if updates are cummulative...they are. Works with every program I have that supports a web cam (video capture and/or video messaging). Works perfectly in 2D mode. 3D effect is wild! I would suggest ordering additional glasses (plastic frames) for multiple guest viewing. Calibration of 3d effect is simple which takes seconds. Has 2 additional 3D modes other than red/cyan. I will be purchasing eDimensional 3D glasses and will add to this comment. Stays put on top of screen. Head can tilt in any direction and has a solid feel. Good USB cord lenght. This unit sells now for almost half of what I bought it for, so consider it a steal.

Cons: At every boot up, I get a "Found new hardware" message but I just cancel and the camera works fine. Cardboard glasses that come with it are cheesey but they are perfect to give away to those who will view your videos or video messages.

Yes, it is terribly cute. Yes, the amuzing little arms and legs don't really let it cling to a monitor very well (that's why duct tape was invented). But the thing actually works properly!

All one needs to remember is REMOVE any other camera drivers/applications and then reboot BEFORE installing the drivers and software for this. Also, the CD that ships with it has a down-level driver, don't even bother with it. Just download the current software from their web site and all will be good.

We are using it for machine vision applications and have found that the optics are adequate for most "normal" uses and that cameras work as advertised. It works properly with the universal camera capture routines in OpenCV and does everything the Microsoft generic camera driver needs. If it falls to the floor (remember the funny arms/legs thing) it won't break.

Besides the arms/legs, the only negative points are the physical tightness of the focus rings (a bit hard to turn) and up/down tilt is hard because it will fall off whatever it's trying to hang on to.

If the manufacturer could put powered pan and tilt on it for a reasonable price it would be really good.

Yes, we're buying more of them.

Let me first say that I'm taken aback by the outrageous prices being asked by private sellers here for new, unopened units. For something that originally retailed for $149, a $490+ asking price is a bit much. Sure, it's no longer in production and is basically a collectible item now but still...

I considered buying a used one here but decided to slug it out on the bay instead and found a pristine one for about half the price of the original new selling price and it included all original parts and packaging.

I am a legacy PPC user and my machine is so old that it only supports USB 1.1. As such, my choices are very limited. There are a few firewire units still being made that are compatible but the form factor and mounting options kept me coming back to the iSight. I have tried some of the other compatible units but they all fell short in some way, be it integrated audio, picture quality or again, the mounting options. After receiving my unit and using it for a few weeks now, I can say that I'm happy with my decision.

Using Ecamm software's iGlasses with the iSight solves its color balance and low-light problems. The only thing I wish they had incorporated was a manual/auto-focus switching mechanism. Other than that, I can't complain and getting a used iSight WAY after the fact has breathed new life into this old dinosaur. For me, the iSight is still a very good camera for the PPC (and especially pre-USB 2.0) user.

I absolutely love my iSight webcam. As with everything Apple, you literally just plug it in and it works on Mac OS X (I am running Panther). It is unbelievably easy to use, also. One piece of advice: If your Mac comes with a built-in mic, use it instead of the iSight mic because you'll get better sound quality.

Apple's iSight performs as promised on all levels -- great video and sound quality. The camera is light, easy to set up and use, and truly portable.

The only things preventing me from giving it a full 5 stars are the included mounting stands. Apple was smart enough to include separate stands for positioning the camera on top of CRT monitors, on flat screens and a laptop. However the first two require that the stand me affixed using an adhesive sticker on the bottom of the stands. Though I had few reservations about sticking it to my old (and ugly) black-cased CRT, I'm not sure a lot of people will want to stick something onto the back of their lovely new iMac G5 screens.

Positives:

Small/Portable

Cute! It's pink and looks very cute on your laptop.

Comes complete with a mic, manual lens, photo capture, laptop clamp, and you can rotate it to face any direction really.

Negatives:

Grainy and laggy video/Audio feedback when using with Skype (or at least I did)

Initial confusion on how to focus the lens (I thought it didn't work for like, 10 minutes!)

Clamp doesn't fit right

I would suggest if you can find it cheap! But don't pay anything over 15 dollars for it!!!

This web cam works quite well. Windows 7 automatically recognized and installed the necessary drivers; no need to install the bloated software Logitech provides. One slight issue though. When I first installed it there was a big lag between my movements and the image displayed by the camera. This resulted in the audio being more than one second out of sync with the video. I spent a lot of time troubleshooting my USB ports before I realized the problem was caused by "Low Light Boost" being enabled by default on the camera. Turning this off and using the camera's exposure control settings to adjust for room lighting eliminated the lag.

The picture quality is good, and it worked with Skype on Windows XP. However, you need to install drivers (at least with XP), and it still wasn't accessible straight from Windows. By comparison, with Microsoft's LifeCam, I just plugged it in, and it worked with everything.

Also, who designed that bracket? It doesn't grip laptop screens or anything else; it just falls right off. If you try to sit it on a flat surface, it's not level and awkward to aim. I wouldn't recommend it.

This is the best camera in this price range I've used.

It has good resolution and light control. It's truly plug and play.

I did install the creative software because it has some good tools including motion activated alerts for monitoring and face tracking technology.

It also comes with a head set that has the same earphone distributed with the Zen product line. The microphone quality is much better than I expected. It has good noise cancellation control and is very clear.

The video capture and editing works well also.

Does not do what it is supposed to do. Attached to a W7 64bit computer freshly setup and after several hours of attempting to get it to work I gave up. Downloaded all the latest software from MS as well as the latest driver for this software. Good luck with the driver page on MS as it is very poorly put together and hard to determine just what you should utilize. Purchased because I thought that since it was Microsoft it would work with their software. It does not. No support and no way to get it to work. Replaced with a Logitech Webcam which set up easily and works flawlessly. The LifeCam is not worth purchasing.

To use this camera for video calls it's an absolute must to disable the autofocus. And unfortunately you must do it every time you've rebooted your computer, if not every time you restart your video calling program. The autofocus will hunt back and forth over its full focusing range on a regular basis even if the subject is relatively close to the camera and moving very little. The end result is maddening. I don't know if this "feature" is reduced by a super strong connection, but I do know I'm not the first to complain about it by any means.

The only solution is to open up the camera settings and disable the hyped "true color + ClearFrame Technology". Once this box is unchecked you can then go into the "Properties" and uncheck autofocus. While you're at it you may want to uncheck the auto exposure and the auto color temperature and just make adjustments there that look good to you.

Once you've killed the horribly evil autofocus the video is actually quite good for such a tiny camera. That's why I give this 3 stars instead of 1. I've used it with Skype and the video is sometimes good even with sub 500 Kbit connections. It is definitely much, much, better than the built in camera in a new Dell laptop (relatively high end with a Core i5 and 4GB RAM) just purchased in the past 2 months. It's also better than a camera built into an iMac that I've had the opportunity to compare with.

- No TWAIN Driver for standard applications.

- It doesnt capture really sharp images (Do not believe otherwise)

- It gets a little a little too warm when used... YES... Hot compared to others.

Hardly worth the wait.

Installing on the computer was as simple as plugging it into the USB port. However, the self-detecting lighting is deplorable. The better the light source, the worse the quality of your video will be. The same is true for the worse the light source is. The best lighting is actually dim lighting such as sitting in one's bedroom with the curtains drawn.

There is a button atop the web camera, and I'm not sure what it does because it just doesn't work.

If you're in need of a temporary solution to your web camera problems, then I highly suggest this being one of your last options. However, if you're strapped for cash, then make this purchase only after extensively looking elsewhere.

This thing is the best webcam I've had in a long time. Very quick even at high resolutions, great color and sharpness, UVP so no driver hassles. The built-in microphone that is accessed as a USB device (so no separate cable or audio card) is a big plus and works great. I tried the Agama V-2050AF a couple of days ago, and I'm taking it back and getting another one of these; the 2050 was horribly laggy even at 800x600. Gave this to my Girlfriend to christmas so when can talk more often while she is at school. Right off the bat she had problems with it. We use Skype to talk with it and after about 50 seconds the blue light on the camera turns off and her picture freezes. She can see me but i cant see her.

The webcam when it is working has a terrible picture and terrible sound quality. I would never suggest this webcam to anyone who actually wants to be able see and hear with it.

The title says it all. I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit operating system running on an Intel i7 920 processor. Logitech's camera software will not install correctly. You can't get a picture at all. I spent over an hour on the phone with Logitech Support and also corresponded via emails. The net effect was no help. Their software gives Script Errors, Not Win32 application errors, and it thinks I am running an AMD 32 bit processor. Don't buy this product for use on an Intel Windows 7 machine. I does not work. I will work fine on the obsolete XP operating system that I no linger own.

I did have a little problem getting Skype and the Logitech to work well together. I had installed the Skype software and then purchased the webcam and installed it. I then was unable to sign onto Skype. I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling Skype, after which I had no problems whatsoever. I would recommend installing the webcam first and then Skype. I ordered the second webcam through DealBarn and it arrived quickly.

This device can't seem to stay working for more than a week. Every week, I have to unplug the camera and plug it back in so the recording software will record video. The recording just stops somewhere mid-week and won't start again. Sometimes the camera won't even show video through the software or through it's own interface until you restart the camera.

The recording software doesn't work right either. It gives you the option to limit how much disk space it will use to record video. However, the settings don't seem to impact how much it actually uses. Mine stores about 1GB worth of data. I would like it to store more but can't get it to do that. Their technical support had no suggestions other than downloading the latest firmware for the camera which is already on there.

When it's working, it's adequate. But it's not something you can leave unattended and just assume it's working. You have to check it all the time to make sure the software is still recording. And again, you're going to have to rebooted it at least weekly WHEN (not if) it stops working.

I'm trying a Cisco camera next (I know it's still the same manufacturer...but maybe it's just this particular model that is flawed).

This camera keeps disconecting form my wireless network -- same problem that many other reviewers already have noticed. Now the only hope it would stay connected in wired mode. Cam is very unreliable for home monitoring, especially if you are away for a few days. Software is a pure nonsence. I had to re-intall it many times. Bizarre product from SYSCO. I am giving it the last chance now in wired configuration before shipping it back. By the way, I realy liked wired web camera by Schlage. It does have poor features and internet service requres a monthly fee, but, it is a true plag-n-play and totally reliable when you need it in terms of the remote internet access. I don't care much about the camera with all the bells and wistles if you can't reliably access it via internet. This Linksys cam is cheap and fancy, but UNRELIABLE.

the cam isnt too bad. when its finally programmed, its pretty dependable.

HOWEVER

thefact that there is an active x control with a certificate expired un july of 09, and STILL no fix from linksys for something easy to fix puts into question their WHOLE support structure. that should have been set to expire in 2015, or some time when g is no longer used(we have a b from dlink, but went with the linksys cause it was g wireless). then we removed g for pci compliance, and hardwired it. now, we cant use the newer cam JUST because of an expired certificate - unless i drill down the security of the workstation to non-existant for active x - something i refuse to do at a company. all in all, the cam was ok for business uses, but, as linksys hasnt updated the certificate, i will NOT be buying any linksys cams - im still deciding if this is bothering me enough to stop me from buying the rest of their line of hardware. and yes, i do this stuff for a living.

The title in this review might be a little bit misleading. You can use MAC or LINUX to get the video stream from this camera; however, you have to figure out your own recording solution. The setup software and recording works with only Windows. If you use something else, you are on your own. I give 1 star rating because of this.

To be fair, Linksys printed on the box that this product only works with Windows.

The DCS-5300 only works with Internet Explorer, which is okay.

The DCS-5300 lets you remotely control the camera, which is okay.

The DCS-5300 reboots itself every 24 hours from when you plugged it in, which is okay.

My DCS-5300 doesn't always respond to the remote control requests, which is not okay, but it will reboot in 24 hours and some times that fixes this problem, so that makes it okay.

It's just okay. For $250, I wanted more than okay.

The enclosed web-based software from Dlink is nice and easy to handle and does the job cleanly and simply.

Exactly what you want from a home or small office camera system to monitor activity.

However, I purchased the cameras (2) because of the description of the IP security suite that was supposed to come with it, allowing 16 cameras to be monitored and recorded simultaneously.

Rubbish....! The software was terrible and recording just one camera was a pain, then playing it back was even worse.

It's hard to describe just how bad that software was.

Cameras were nice though.

This was to replace my old D-Link 6620 camera which just quit working eafter about 1 year. I figured why spend a fortune if they don't last. This one is clearly a lower quality camera in every way. The lack of an auto focus, or even a way to focus it from my PC, makes it nearly impossible to set up properly. The low light ability is not as good either. All I can say is it works...for now.

The camera is excellent. I have retail stores 50 miles from me and I can watch my employees while I control the movement of the camera from my PC at home. There is no DVR necessary as the software is in the camera. It will move almost 360 degrees. However, be careful about which vendor you use. I have purchased 6 of these and the last two were older models although the model numbers were the same.

The camera is a great camera especially for the price. But beware of the seller saying it's a 20megapixel camera. On the actual camera is says 8megapixels and even in the description is says 20 megapixel and describes the camera exactly, except for the real pixel amount. I bought this camera thinking I was getting a great deal, but it is indeed a 10 dollar camera, a better 10 dollar camera, but def. wasnt worth 50 before.

The image is clear, I havent seen any delays or anything and the LED lights are handy. I'm still not sure what the top button actually does, i've pushed it, held it down and waited but nothing happens. I'm assuming its suppose to be the on/off button.

The camera seems like a toy the first time you get it, but it does what it's suppose to do especially for such a low price. If something happens in the future, you get what you pay for, thats all i can say about that. But i have a feeling this will do just fine until I figure which REAL webcam to purchase. I purchased this item 2 months ago, tried it with windows 7 using Vista drivers from their website.. couldn't make it work. Emailed support to see if there will be Windows 7 drivers .. answer: not sure, if we do we will let you know. Hooked up to a XP machine, works ok if the ambient lighting is ok, not so good in low light, don't know what the LED's do, never light up white as some people claim and appear to have no IR effect, picture black when I darken room. Does appear to see IR from a remote, in a dark room I can turn on a IR remote and see the glow albeit very weak. Nice Clamp...

It claims to work with the macintosh with some driver you can download from vmicro - God alone knows what this driver I installed actually does, but it doesn't run a camera

It is a total ripoff. At least if you are going to sell a hokey camera they could at least tell me what it actually does. The description must be cut and pasted out of something else.

This identical camera is branded under many names (evidently you can just have a boat load shipped from china and stick on your own logo). My order said kinamax, i got something from a company called Sabrent.

Bottom line: it is false advertisement and the item is nothing like the description except how it looks in the photo (off, without the white NON-infrared LEDs on)

Upside: It is a very nice camera for the price. The image is crisp and looks like something shot from a DVD camera. The focus is manual on the camera. This might seem like a disadvantage but it is actually an advantage. The other thing I'd like to specifically point out - couple of the previous reviewers indicated this camera is not true infrared and instead just uses bright light. This is NOT true. I called the manufacturer and they confirmed it is really IR. Then I bought the camera and shined in some IR light (from a regular remote control and then from a handmade IR emitting device). It certainly picks the infrared as it should.

Downside: Not a lot of settings (but not a major issue given its price). There's no way to turn either IR or White light off. I saw a similar camera which had these buttons for turning different types of vision on or off. Not a major issue though.

I really like this device. It has great sound and good picture quality for the price. However, the windscreen on mine popped off with normal use, and when the company sent me a replacement, the 'new' one already had a broken windscreen. The glue seems unable to hold it in place. (You can't really use it without that, since the mic will be unprotected from wear and tear.)

Blue makes fantastic microphones, but the webcam on this model is awful. It may record at HD resolution, but the picture remains grainy (which actually looks worse with the high resolution). The most disappointing thing about the video quality is the slowness of the camera. Blue claims to run this cam at 30fps, and I have no way to prove or disprove that claim. What I can tell you, though, is that the reaction time on the camera is similar to cell phone cams where there's massive delay and pixelation on movement. Movement is blurry, and even lip movement seems not to track with speech. Another note, this was all tested on a local wireless LAN using skype and compared to the performance of a Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac (Black). The Logitech was so superior in video quality that it looked like I was comparing a modern webcam to one built 5 years ago.

All in all, if you really need good sound, get yourself a Blue microphone like the Yeti, Snowflake or Snowball, but don't waste your time on their video products. The Eyeball is an intensely beautiful design, but all the parts except the microphone seem flimsy and poor build quality. (Again, the mic is excellent build quality). I know it looks nice, but it's just not worth the awful video performance.

Sometime last week, 07/15/2010 he told me that the microphone part of this webcam just went out. I hope that this is just an isolated incident because I am planning to buy another one on this or buy the newer Blue Snowball.

I used this to set up an eMac to use with Skype. It worked very well for sound and installed easily, but I didn't realize that it needed a computer with more than 1Ghz g4 (I think 1.2 would do) and USB 2.0. However, it still worked very well for sound. Video was not useable on a machine this slow. If you've got a fast tower mac or mini that needs a webcam, go for it. Most iMacs that are fast enough already have an iSight.

I do not recommend the Eyeball USB webcam: You have to search to find a good webcam for a MAC computer. Although this webcam works with the MAC, it is not, I believe, the most recent or best version that Eyeball claims to have. I think that this camera is very early version of the Eyeball webcam. It had a very poor video image, sending maybe 10 frames instead of 30 frames a second so the image "chattered" and strobed and was pretty bad compared to the Dynex 1.3 megapixal camera which is a much better camera and a much better deal. The sound was pretty good, but did not in any way make up for the poor video quality.

If you have settled on this camera for a final purchase, you may want to look further... The camera arrived with no usb adapter in the base and there are no drivers available for Windows 7 and likely will not be, as the support from the manufacturer is non-existant. All in all, not a good purchase. Because of these problems, I had to return to Amazon. The vendor is top notch, I arrived days before it was supposed to and everything about them was 5 star... Unless you are planning on using this camera directly from a usb port on a pre Windows 7 machine, I can not recommend this camera...

The base of the webcam is supposed to plug into your computer using a mini-USB-to-standard-USB cord (not included, but I have a lot of them). But when I checked the base, there was nothing inside it -- no electronics, no port for the mini-USB, nothing for the top portion to plug into.

The "laptop" version (just the bendy black arm and top) worked on my computer (not as good as the iSight, but okay), but for stability I really needed the base. Sadly, I must return it to Amazon.

I (obviously!) don't know if this is a common problem or I was just the unlucky one (even the best products occasionally have mistakes slip through) but this one arrived at my house without the hardware needed to make it work.

This works ok. But what do you expect for $20? I plugged the USB it into my keyboard and opened up QT 7 and made a new movie recording. Some delay was evident, and there is no mike, so I had to set up my Logitech mike too. It does work fine on my Mac though! I am running Snow Leopard on an Intel MacPro desktop.

I just turned on iChat and it works there too. The blue color is ok. The snake-swivel neck is helpful. The stand it comes with and miniCd drivers are pretty useless, but again...$20...I don't know what the previous guy was talking about...

This webcam is useless for a Mac computer - it didn't work on my Mac. Well, to be honest, I haven't tried it with Skype (that's the reason I needed a webcam.) Later, I purchased a HP-webcam for about $30, and it also doesn't work when I'm not on Skype. But thanks to another review, I found out that I have to launch Skype first, and then the webcam works perfectly fine. So that might be the same case for this webcam - if you just want to use it with Skype, try this first. There is no need to install any software, it works fine if you just plug it in. (I've already shipped it back, so I can't try it.) But returning the item and getting a refund was not a problem and very easy.

I asked the seller before I ordered the webcam if the product will work with a Mac, and they didn't even know the answer! If they sell something, they should really know their products....

It was the least expensive Mac-compatible camera available. I thought, "How bad can it be?" Hmmmm, "Atrocious, Baleful, Contemptible, Deplorable, Execrable, Frightful..." Too bad the English alphabet has only twenty-six letters; there are so many more words to describe how truly awful it is.

Although you can adjust the sharpness slightly by moving the tiny ring on the lens, the displayed image appears as though viewed through waxed paper. Without the additional purchase of eCamm's iUSBCam software it doesn't work at all, and you'll find even that software truly and still requires the additional purchase of the sister product, iGlasses, to get a picture that doesn't approximate the glowing blobs described by someone who has been abducted by extra-terrestrials. Lighting is tricky ... it doesn't like low light or shadows. but too much light, as from a desk lamp set to illuminate your face, makes your image glow as though it were radioactive.

The field of vision is oddly short and long, like a 3x5 index card. The preview app, if left in the dock, is helpful for adjusting the ambient light before attempting to use iChat and, despite complaints, will turn off both the camera and its little green light. The USB connector must be connected directly to the computer or a powered hub. But the twisty cable is only about twelve inches from connecter to lens, and so rigid at the ends that it protrudes inconveniently far, wasting a good bit of the gooseneck type coil. Oddly, this coil, with all the strength of overcooked spaghetti, actually strengthens when bent or twisted lightly. Pros:

- Cheap

- 640x480 @30 fps is good enough resolution and fps for most day to day video calls. The actual quality of the picture is about the same quality as the average built-in webcam in a budget laptop.

- The RightLight function helps make the webcam passable in low light environments where most cheap webcams would choke.

- Easy installation. Software installed easily and quickly with no hiccups. After that it is just plug and play.

- Logitech software is decent. Logitech is constantly upgrading their webcam software. As of writing this with the Logitech software you can record movies, take pictures and record motion activated movies as well as adjust exposure, gain, contrast, brightness and color intensity.

- Works seamlessly with third party clients such as Skype, AIM, Yahoo, and MSN.

Neutral:

- Universal Monitor Clip barely works on my monitor at the top center position (ie the ideal webcam position). I use a Dell lcd and the camera feels as if it would pop off if I actually bumped it. Actually, I just bumped it to test it out and it will pop off. The clip works. It keeps the camera in position, but it just doesn't seem very stable. Also I'm not too sure how universal this monitor clip is when it struggles with my lcd.

Cons:

- Cheap

- No mic. Not a con if you have a mic or a headset, but if you don't then be prepared to buy one. You can buy very cheap mics or you could just buy the Logitech c200 for an extra 10 dollars or a Microsoft webcam with similar specs for an extra 5 dollars and get a built in cheap mic included and not have to worry about buying a good cheap mic or wearing a mic or positioning a mic every time you make a video call.

- The RightLight function is nice and is on by default, but the camera only records/broadcasts at 15 fps or less in this mode. This causes lips to seem out of sync with voices and blurry motions and gestures. To get the full 30 fps you need to disable RightLight.

It works as advertised and if judged with the price in consideration this webcam actually excels in some areas. If you are on a very tight budget, need a cheap decent webcam and already have a mic then I whole heartedly recommend this webcam. But if you don't have a mic or you can afford it, I recommend that you splurge a bit and get a slightly higher quality webcam.

I use Ubuntu Linux as my operating system and this camera worked out of the box. It does what I need it to do (Skype, nothing fancy) and the price was right. Don't expect TV quality for this price. I already had a microphone so that was not a consideration. This is a buy recommendation.

I bought Logitech C120 because it was the cheapest in the store, but its features were the same like of more expensive webcams. When I brought it home, it was very easy to install the cam. It took me less than 2 minutes. It is truly plug-and-play. BUT picture quality turned out to be very bad, grayish and blurry. It hurt my eyes to use it. Its quality is totally unacceptable for me comparing to the picture I used to have with my old built-in laptop webcam that recently failed.

This webcam gave me hassles from the very beginning. I kept getting BSOD (blue screen of death) on my XP laptop until I found a user forum that stated it was a known bug in the echo-canceling feature that Logitech knew about but hadn't corrected or even bothered to alert users about in the troubleshooting FAQ. Thanks to that user forum I found the workaround and so I did get a couple good years of use out of this camera. As with its other webcams there is the intrusive "Logitech Desktop Manager" constantly running in the background that is supposed to download updates (which are few and far between). Still I was more or less satisfied with this cam after those first ugly three months of system crashes.

I became a totally dissatisfied Logitech customer when I bought a new laptop, a 64 bit Windows 7 machine. Not only is Logitech not offering new software, forcing me to buy a new cam when my current expensive one still works, Logitech actually deleted drivers out of their support database that some power users had been using as a workaround for the lack of x64 Windows 7 support for the Orbit MP. That's worse than contempt for your customers; that's downright cold.

I will never buy any Logitech product ever again. No company that has such contempt for its customers deserves my money.

I bought this camera for the mechanical pan/tilt feature, and I was quite happy with how that works. However, I was very disappointed with the image quality. It is significantly worse than my Logitech pro 3000 that I bought years ago. I'm guessing that if I would have paid the extra bucks to get the newer orbit AF (2 megapixel vs 1.3 megapixel of the MP) the image quality would have been what I've come to expect from Logitech. But I went with the cheaper option and am left with a very disappointing product.

This camera was a very contraversial one. I bought 2 cameras (one for me and the other for my boyfriend) and my camera and mic worked perfectly fine....but my boyfriend's didn't. His camera had a terriable quality (I could barely see his face it was so blurry!) and his mic didn't work at all. I suggest you save your money and buy a better webcam.

After that, it started working but not the way it should. The picture still isn't great, the real problem is the suction cup stand wont stick to anything, anything at all. This is a complete waste of time and money. Not even worth 10 dollars.
